Psychological trauma in entrepreneurs and CEOs: how to recognize it and when to consider holistic therapy?

Entrepreneurs and CEOs are usually said to “handle crises perfectly” – but rarely is the price paid by their nervous system discussed.

Data from 2026 show the scale of burnout among managers and leaders, and some of them experience not only chronic stress but also real psychological trauma, often mistaken for “normal” fatigue.

How does psychological trauma in an entrepreneur differ from ordinary burnout?

Professional burnout builds up gradually – it is the result of months or years of chronic stress, overtime, lack of sleep and recovery.

Psychological trauma is more often associated with experiences that exceed coping capacity: a sudden financial crisis, aggressive control, loss of a partner, public humiliation, threats, a workplace accident, prolonged mobbing.

In practice:

  • burnout is often a “slow fading” – growing fatigue, cynicism, loss of meaning

  • psychological trauma is the feeling that something inside you “broke”, and the body and psyche react as if the danger were still present, even though formally “the situation has been handled”

For an entrepreneur and CEO these boundaries are especially hard to detect, because the culture of “coping” rewards ignoring one’s own warning signals.

Symptoms of psychological trauma in entrepreneurs and CEOs

What happens in the body and nervous system?

Trauma is written not only in memory but also in the body – the nervous system learns to operate in “fight, flight or freeze” mode.
In entrepreneurs this can look like:

  • chronic muscle tension (especially neck, shoulders, jaw, abdomen)

  • heart complaints (palpitations, a feeling of “tightness”), despite normal tests

  • gut complaints, abdominal pain, diarrhea or constipation without a clear somatic cause

  • episodes of “freezing”: you stare at the screen but can’t make any decision

Research on therapeutic yoga and polyvagal theory shows that trauma affects the regulation of the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems and how the body reacts to stress.

Emotional and cognitive symptoms

Psychological trauma in an entrepreneur often manifests as:

  • intrusive memories of a difficult event (e.g. a meeting with the bank, a conversation with an investor, a workplace accident)

  • avoidance of situations that remind of the trauma (e.g. delegating, meetings with audits, investors)

  • sudden outbursts of anger or crying that seem “disproportionate” to the trigger

  • a sense of detachment from oneself and others (“as if I were watching my life from the outside”)

These symptoms can coexist with depression or generalized anxiety, which is why everything is so easily reduced to “I’m just tired” or “I’m having a bad period”.

Why do entrepreneurs and CEOs so often ignore trauma?

The business environment rewards resilience, rapid decisions and “imperturbability”.
I often hear from patients: “others have it worse”, “I can’t fall apart because my team and family depend on me”, “if I say I can’t cope, I’ll lose credibility”.

Defense mechanisms also operate more subtly:

  • rationalization (“it’s just a business failure”)

  • perfectionism (“I have to control everything more”)

  • work addiction (work as a way to avoid feeling emotions)

As a result trauma is not named, and the organism continues to function as if the threat were ongoing – which over time leads to burnout, sleep disorders, depression, anxiety and somatic problems.

When to consider holistic therapy (psychiatry + body + spirituality)?

Holistic psychiatry assumes there is no “entrepreneur without a body” or “CEO without history” – the nervous system, emotions, beliefs, spirituality and business conditions form a single system.

It is worth considering an online psychiatric consultation and holistic therapy if:

  • you have had somatic symptoms for months that are not explained by tests (heart, gut, muscle tensions)

  • intrusive images or thoughts related to a specific business situation recur

  • you react with excessive anger, anxiety or “freezing” in situations that are objectively not that dangerous

  • you notice that your spirituality (meditation, yoga practice, prayer) no longer brings relief and sometimes even increases guilt or pressure (“I should be handling this better”)

In many cases combining trauma therapy (e.g. EMDR, body-based approaches) with psychiatric consultation and lifestyle interventions produces better results than a single method.

What does a holistic online psychiatric consultation for an entrepreneur look like?

Online psychiatric consultation in a holistic model differs from a “quick visit for a prescription”.
At Holistica during an e‑visit with a psychiatrist:

  • we talk about your symptoms (sleep, mood, anxiety, body) and the context: the company, responsibility, key business events

  • I ask about previous experiences (also outside work) that may have burdened your nervous system

  • we check how yoga, meditation, mindfulness practices have worked for you so far – what helps and what may worsen the discomfort

  • together we assess whether pharmacological treatment is needed or whether at this stage psychotherapy/trauma therapy + lifestyle regulation is sufficient

Psychiatric teleconsultation is conducted in compliance with Polish regulations, in a secure online environment, with the possibility of issuing e‑prescriptions and medical documentation.

Yoga and bodywork in trauma therapy for entrepreneurs

In the holistic approach yoga is not a “nice add‑on” but a tool for regulating the nervous system.
Books and research on therapeutic yoga and polyvagal theory emphasize that:

  • gentle, mindful movement can help to exit freeze and excessive arousal

  • breathwork affects the vagus nerve and the sense of safety in the body

  • grounding practices (contact with the ground, mindful sensing of the body) help return to the “here and now” instead of constantly reacting to past threat

An entrepreneur with trauma needs therapeutic yoga, not a “rush to the mats” – often this means a few simple sequences a day rather than an hour of intense practice.

Spirituality as a resource, not another pressure

For many leaders spirituality is an important part of life – it can give meaning and support, but it can also be a source of pressure (“a true leader shouldn’t be afraid”, “if I practice I have no right to feel anger”).

In the holistic approach:

  • we treat your spirituality as a resource that can support healing,

  • we separate healthy practice from perfectionism

  • we do not replace therapy or medical treatment with “spiritual shortcuts” if symptoms indicate the need for medical intervention.

How you can start – 3 steps for an entrepreneur suspecting trauma

  1. Name the problem honestly: instead of “I’m just tired”, try: “I have been in situations that may have overwhelmed me”.

  2. Verify the symptoms: look at signals from your body, emotions and behaviors (avoidance, freezing, outbursts, intrusive memories).

  3. Consider consulting a specialist who works with trauma (online psychiatrist, psychotraumatologist, EMDR therapist) – especially if symptoms persist for more than a few weeks or worsen.
